Fundus examination showed diffuse loss of the nerve fiber layer and an excavated optic nerve head with advanced-stage glaucoma. The red, sunset-like fundus around the optic disc was seen due to a lack of pigmentation in the RPE layer. A normal retinal appearance can be seen in the area two or three optic disc distances away from the optic disc.
