Classification of nerve root anomalies (NRAs) by Neidre and Macnab including a fourth entry of NRA described by Burke et al. Type 1 anomalies include those of conjoined nerve roots arising from a common dural sheath. Type 2 anomalies are most common, where two nerve roots exit through the same foramen. Type 3 anomalies are those in which adjacent nerve roots are connected in the form of a transverse or vertical anastomosis. Type 4 anomaly is a confluent nerve root with two contributions arising from the thecal sac coalescing to form a single nerve root that exits via the intervertebral foramen
