Mechanism of neoplastic fever. Inflammatory cytokines are produced by necrotic tissue or tumor cells, and these factors act on the hypothalamus through prostaglandin E2 induction, thereby by causing fever by raising the set body temperature. Furthermore, tumor necrosis factor-α acts on the liver, producing C-reactive protein and thus increasing the serum C-reactive protein level.
